Best Verner Panton Chair Redesigns For Its 50th Anniversary

It all began in the 1960s, when Verner Panton came to Vitra to show Willi and Rolf Fehlbaum a deep-drawn prototype of a chair made out of plastic. They were fascinated by the idea and wanted to pursue serial production of the chair. It finally reached the manufacturing stage in 1967. The first models were made out of fibreglass-reinforced polyester, followed by a version in rigid polyurethane foam (Baydur) and another in injection-moulded Luran S (ASA). It became apparent with time that the latter material was susceptible to fatigue and breakage. For this reason, Vitra suspended production of the chair in the late 1970s.

Yet in the meantime, so much progress has been made in plastics technology that the Panton Chair can once again be manufactured by injection moulding – now in the material of polypropylene, which is fully recyclable. The renewed alternative of injection moulding technology makes it possible to also offer the chair in an inexpensive version, thereby making this classic available to a wide public.

Even after Panton’s death in 1998, work on this classic continued. With the approval of Marianne Panton, Vitra launched the Panton Junior in 2006, a children’s version of the chair based on old original plans. The Panton Chair has always been a favourite of children. They like its bright colours, the pleasant smoothness of its curves and the fact that you can not only climb on it, but also use it to make great caves and hiding places. Identical to the full-size model with regard to material and shape, the Panton Junior is approximately 25 percent smaller. This makes it a happy place to sit for children in preschool and primary grades.

3rd place design by Maris Interiors

In spring Vitra UK launched a national Panton Chair Competition. In the search for the best customised Panton Chair, architects and designers were asked to present their unique idea for the classic design piece. All 31 entries were auctioned on 1st July 2010 and the proceedings of about £ 10’000 were passed onto Shelter. (http://england.shelter.org.uk/)

Formi, 2005 design: Frans Schrofer

“Formidable” was the judgement given to Frans Schrofer’s first version of this rotating rocking armchair in 2002. The organic design was anything but conventional, so that Formi became “a little bit of eternity” and, with that, took its place in the world of interior design. Three years after the introduction of Formi, Leolux presents the Phase 2. The organic form and the rotating-rocking function have stayed the same but, thanks to little adjustments in the back, the seat has become even more comfortable. Small details such as the “flat band” in the seat provide a visual separation and contribute to an even better balance of style. Formi has been updated to “level 2006” with this Phase 2 and is even more “formidable” than its predecessor. The Formi remains the rotating-rocking armchair from Leolux.

Gisa, 2005. Design: Jane Worthington

Inspiration from nature leads to soft forms that envelop people. The Gisa swan is a compact armchair, with natural grace and a neck that turns and bends to serve as a backrest.

Excalibur, 1990. Design: Jan Armgardt

Excalibur’s organic forms surround you with a sublime comfort. The backrest, which is moulded to the human body, envelops the connoisseur. Furthermore, Excalibur is a joy to behold. In designing this armchair, Jan Armgardt was years ahead of the developments which were to affect furniture design: soft forms and flowing lines bear witness to so much character that each product remains an individual creation. Excalibur has become one of Leolux’s legends.

Sjamaan, 1998. Design: Hugo de Ruiter

As bewitching as the Siberian wizard after whom he is named! Just like a small wizard from Leolux, the Sjamaan armchair lets your wishes come true. Beautifully designed by Hugo de Ruiter and comprising several surprising aspects. The seat depth of this little armchair is adjustable, so that you can opt for both a deep or shallow seat. Furthermore, this little armchair is available with feet in several heights. This way, Sjamaan can be easily adapted for large or small users.

Kilenge closed front, 2001. Design: Hugo de Zeeuw / Scooter & Partners

With design, the art of omission allows great attention to be paid to the proportions and the details. A curved back, rounded arms and a front of the Kilenge armchairs follow perfectly the contours of the seated person. Owing to the special split in the back you can sit right back without the back’s upholstery being pulled uncomfortably taut. Kilenge provides proof that Leolux has command of this art.

25 Acrylic Dining Chairs by Jean Charles de Castelbajac

French by way of Morocco, Marquis of the Castelbajac clan, and designer for the stars (he created Madonna’s renowned “Coat of Teddy Bears”), Jean Charles de Castelbajac is certainly among the international Glitterati. But don’t hold that against him—his fashion designs have left a definitive mark on the late 20th. Century, and his furnishings are poised to exert an equally distinctive influence over the early 21st. Take, for instance, his recent collection, “25 Acrylic Dining Chairs by Jean Charles de Castelbajac et al.” for Tom Thomas in New York.

The retailer says the collection comprises “a line of pieces where Form, Image, Transparency and Light All Play Subtly Together… these Dining Chairs are both Whimsical and Classic in the same moment.” Not only that, but they may stand as the contemporary world’s best attempt at a legitimate reprisal of the authentic Bauhaus. While that may sound like hyperbole, consider that, just like the early Bauhaus, “25 Chairs” represents an admirable synthesis of a workshop mentality with creative artistry (the “et al” refers to collaborative designers); an ongoing effort to use new materials in an efficient way (each chair is made of “Smart Acrylic”); and a pronounced acknowledgment of the influence of advertising over art (not to mention the creative possibilities inherent in what one might refer to as a “billboard aesthetic”). The collection is also indebted to the notion of automated customization—clients choose from a roster of different profiles and different decorative elements.

While the preceding information should suffice to bear out the comparison between Castelbajac’s new collection and the Bauhaus, here’s one last correspondence: the most modern of the line and my favorite (a short-backed transparent number with slightly flared arms) has a certain aesthetic affinity with the work of Paul Klee.

Muungano Bench by Muungano

Laser cut bench that forms the word “muungano” which means union. A tag melted into an bench that dominates the room and with a strong visual impact. At the time of making I overdosed on Derrida belive it or not. So the bench became a comment on differences as a foundation for language and form.

The bench is 3 meters wide and was produced for the exhibition “Conceptual Design” at the National Gallery, Stockholm. Later it was exhibited at Botkyrka Konsthall and Botkyrka gymansium. Production by Felixsson Eftr and Karlskoga Billack
